ANIMATION PRODUCTION DRAWINGS

ORIGINAL ANIMATION PRODUCTION CELS

The most sought after type of animation art. Sometimes called original production cels (short for celluloids), these are hand-painted and have generally been used in the making of an animated film or cartoon short. They are filmed in sequence to create the illusion of motion. Production cels that are not used in the final production are called model cels and/or preliminary art. Many original production cels have been either lost of destroyed throughout the years which serves to enhance its value as collectible art.

This page loads slowly so please be patient. There are hundreds of cels that are not displayed here but available for sale so please inquire.

BETTY BOOP & BEETLE BAILEY

BEETLE BAILEY made his comic-strip debut as a college cutup in 1950 in a mere 50 newspapers. The feature was soon bought and syndicated by King Features and is noted as the last strip personally approved by William Randolph Hearst. With America's entry into the Korean war, cartoonist Mort Walker's star character accidentally enlisted in the Army, and the rest is comic-strip history! Beetle Bailey went on to become the third most widely distributed comic strip of all time. His error proved a blessing in disguise, as readers of more than 1,800 newspapers around the world can attest.

Before Marilyn and Madonna, BETTY BOOPed her way into hearts worldwide with her unique wide-eyed innocence and cartoon sensuality. Debuting in 1930 as a curvaceous canine cabaret singer in the Max Fleisher short Dizzy Dishes, animation's first leading lady remains a glamorous international icon today.

THE FLINTSTONES

Produced by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, The Flintstones burst onto the screen in 1960 as the first animated situation comedy shown in primetime television and ran for six seasons. The final episode aired on April 01, 1966 though the series continued to have a strong afterlife in syndication and has been around in one form or another ever since. Patterned after Jackie Gleason's The HONEYMOONERS, The Flintstones were designed as a program for the entire family and did not appear as "children's television" until its rebroadcast by NBC in 1967. Since that time, the Flintstones have been the subject of three feature films and countless spin-offs and specials, not to mention years of product endorsement including such sponsors as Alka-Seltzer, One-A-Day Vitamins, and Post Cereals

GARFIELD

Jim Davis is the creator of Garfield, probably the biggest cat in comics. Born on a small farm in rural Indiana, Davis' asthma forced him inside and into drawing. Growing up with more than 25 cats it's no wonder that in 1978 Davis created Garfield. Initially Davis had a lot of trouble getting his work published but the overweight, lazy, lasagna-loving cat would soon catapult to the top. United Features signed him up and when the first Garfield paperback was published it reached the top of the bestseller lists and stayed there for 100 weeks. Garfield has since appeared in over 2,400 newspapers worldwide, garnered 4 Emmy awards and starred in a top rated Saturday morning cartoon. Davis now oversees his own company where animated art, comic strips, TV specials and a variety of books continue to be developed.

PINK PANTHER

The PINK PANTHER first appeared in 1963 when director Blake Edwards needed an animated opening sequence for his film "The Pink Panther". He assigned the newly formed DePatie-Freleng (headed by Looney Toons director Friz Freleng and producer David H. DePatie) to create a cartoon character for the film's opening sequence. Edwards chose a design drawn by Hawley Pratt, who was Freleng's layout man for nearly a decade. Pratt was assigned to direct the opening sequence for the movie and the Panther literally stole the show, so United Artists decided to give the Panther his own theatrical series.

POPEYE and OLIVE OYL

He's short, balding, ornery and downright ugly by anyone's standards. But countless numbers of fans have grown up admiring and identifying with this unpretentious spinach-loving hero. Celebrating his 75th Anniversary in 2004, "Popeye" remains one of the most widely recognized and best-loved personalities ever. Popeye made his first public appearance in 1929, in Elzie Segar's then 10-year-old comic strip, "Thimble Theatre", which originally revolved around Olive Oyl's family. Although he was introduced as a minor walk-on character, Popeye quickly "muskled" his way into the limelight and eclipsed the older characters to become the star of "Thimble Theatre." With Popeye came a host of new, off-beat funny folks such as Swee'Pea, the "infink" Popeye adopted; J. Wellington Wimpy, the world's most hamburger-obsessed moocher; and Bluto, the hairy "heavy" with the glass jaw. Today Popeye continues to be one of the most widely recognized and beloved characters in the world.

RAMBO

Rambo was based on the successful movie franchise of the same name starring Sylvester Stallone as freedom fighter John Rambo. The cartoon series debuted in April of 1986 as a five part mini series, and was renewed in September as a daily cartoon. In the cartoon, Rambo was now part of a team called The Force of Freedom which went on missions around the world battling against the evil organization S.A.V.A.G.E., led by General Warhawk. Although the cartoon was filled with lots of fighting and gun fire, there was never any sensational violence, blood or gore, and rarely did anyone ever die.

In the 1990s Scooby Doo returned as a nostalgic pop icon for Generation X. A Scooby-Doo feature film was released in 2002, with a computer-generated Scooby cavorting with a live-action cast including Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred and Matthew Lillard as Shaggy. Taz-Mania ran from 1991-1993 on the Fox Network and is now in syndication. Warner Brothers' drooling, manic Tazmanian Devil worked as a bellhop at Australia’s Hotel Tasmania, along with owner Bushwacker Bob, Constance, Thickly, and the selfish Digeri Dingo. TAZMANIAN DEVIL (TAZ)

The Tasmanian Devil was conceived by director Robert McKimson and writer Sid Marcus in 1954 as they were brainstorming to find a new opponent for Bugs Bunny. One of them remarked that the combined talents of animators at the studio had turned practically every animal in existence into a cartoon character and that all that was left was a Tasmanian Devil.
